Aya El Fallah (b. 1986, Cairo) is an Egyptian visual artist whose practice brings together painting, drawing, text and found imagery to construct layered compositions in which multiple visual languages coexist. Moving fluidly between representation and abstraction, her work assembles portraits, symbols, handwritten notes and gestural marks into images that remain open, shifting and deliberately unresolved. Beginning with a more observational approach, El Fallah’s practice gradually evolved following her time in Côte d’Ivoire, where new cultural surroundings encouraged a freer engagement with colour, surface and composition. Her paintings are built through accumulation rather than resolution, allowing images to emerge, disappear and reappear across successive layers of paint, drawing and collage. Handwritten notes and fragments of text recur throughout the work, functioning less as narrative than as material traces of thought. Rather than explaining the image, they introduce moments of association, interruption and reflection, allowing multiple ideas and perspectives to exist within the same composition. Alongside her studio practice, El Fallah has worked extensively as an art educator, teaching children, adults and senior communities across Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Cairo (2008). Her work has been presented in more than fifty group exhibitions across Egypt and internationally, including Italy, Germany, Sweden, France, Côte d’Ivoire, Malaysia, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. She has held five solo exhibitions, including Backyard, Modelling, My Monsters, Si j’oublie (Old Cheese) and Do You See Me?. Her work is held in private and institutional collections internationally. She lives and works in Cairo.
