Emad Ibrahim is an Egyptian painter whose practice has evolved from figuration towards an increasingly abstract language, while retaining a longstanding concern with colour, movement and the instability of form. Across his work, images are rarely fixed: figures, landscapes and more ambiguous forms emerge through layers of paint before slipping back into the surface. In Ibrahim’s earlier paintings, the human figure provided a recurring point of departure. Fluid contours, translucent washes and shifting fields of colour gave these figures an almost provisional quality, caught between appearance and disappearance. His recent work pushes this instability further. Figurative anchors largely give way to dense accumulations of pigment, where strokes gather, overlap and fracture into concentrated fields of colour. At their edges, suggestions of landscape and organic form surface momentarily before dissolving again. Abstraction here is less a departure from Ibrahim’s earlier practice than an extension of its central tension: how much an image can relinquish and still remain present. Born in Cairo, Ibrahim graduated from the Institute of Art Education at Helwan University in 1991. His practice has also encompassed large-scale commissions, including stage design for The Thousand and One Nights at the Gomhouria Theatre in Cairo and a mural for the Four Seasons Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh. He received Fourth Prize in Gazbia Sirry’s First Prize Competition in 1991 and has participated in exhibitions including the Youth Salon in Cairo and the Biennale Cuba in Havana. His work is held in public and private collections, including the collection of Egypt’s Ministry of Culture.
