Graduated from the Institute of Art Education, Cairo, Egypt.Farghali Abdel Hafiz (b. 1941) is an Egyptian artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the landscapes, materials and cultural memory of Egypt. Moving between painting and mixed media, his work draws particularly on the rural environment of Middle Egypt, where colour, texture and material become carriers of both personal experience and a broader relationship to place. Across his practice, Abdel Hafiz has continually expanded the physical language of painting. Alongside oil, watercolour, pencil and acrylic, he incorporates materials such as sand, mud, clay, corn stalks and metal, bringing elements of the landscape directly into the work. His compositions are marked by spontaneous gesture and richly worked surfaces, where distinctions between image and material often begin to dissolve. His longstanding studio in Dahshour has been central to this relationship with the Egyptian landscape, providing both a physical setting for his practice and a recurring source of its imagery and material vocabulary. Born in Dairout, Middle Egypt, in 1941, Abdel Hafiz graduated from the Institute of Art Education before continuing his studies at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence. Alongside his artistic practice, he has had a longstanding academic career, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Art Education from 1989 to 1994 and subsequently continuing as a professor.
