University of Alexandria

Rabab Ahmed Nemr was an influential Egyptian visual artist whose career extended for more than six decades. Born in Alexandria on 31 March 1939, she developed a distinctive artistic language centred on the human figure, Egyptian identity, social memory, and the cultural and emotional character of Alexandria. Nemr graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Alexandria University in 1963. She later continued her postgraduate education in Spain, receiving a Professorate in Fine Arts from the San Fernando Academy at the University of Madrid in 1977, a qualification considered equivalent to a doctoral degree. Her practice was distinguished by bold figurative compositions, strong black-and-white structures, expressive drawing, geometric organisation, and an intense engagement with the psychological and social dimensions of human life. Her paintings and drawings frequently present groups of figures whose bodies, gestures, and facial expressions communicate intimacy, suffering, resilience, affection, and collective experience. Alexandria occupied a central place in Nemr’s artistic imagination. Its coastal neighbourhoods, fishermen, cafés, popular communities, and daily rituals appear throughout her work, particularly in exhibitions such as The Sea of Anfoushi and For the Love of Alexandria. Rather than documenting the city literally, she reconstructed its atmosphere through memory, line, rhythm, and symbolic human forms. Nemr also played an active role in Egyptian cultural administration and the development of the visual arts in Alexandria. She served as Director General of the General Administration of Fine Arts at the Cultural Palaces in Alexandria and contributed to the organisation of artistic gatherings, exhibitions, and cultural initiatives in the city. She represented Egypt in several international exhibitions and biennales and received important national and international awards. Her works are held in major museum and institutional collections in Egypt, Europe, and the Arab world, as well as in private collections internationally. Rabab Nemr passed away on 28 February 2025, leaving behind a substantial body of work and an important contribution to modern and contemporary Egyptian art.
