Faculty of Applied Arts, University of HelwanZeinab Salem is a pioneering Egyptian ceramic artist, academic, and art educator whose career spans more than five decades. Born in Ismailia in 1945, she studied ceramics at the Faculty of Applied Arts and later earned a Master’s degree and a PhD in the Philosophy of Applied Arts. Her practice is deeply inspired by nature, geology, and the Egyptian landscape. Through organic forms, textured surfaces, and experimental glazes, she transforms clay into sculptural works that evoke shells, rocks, sand formations, waves, and celestial imagery. Alongside her artistic career, Salem served as Professor and Head of the Ceramics Department at Helwan University, contributing significantly to ceramic education and influencing generations of artists and researchers. She has received several major honours, including the Egyptian State Appreciation Award in the Arts in 2021.
