Overview

Communication is almost synonymous with speech or the written word. However, one could argue that it’s perhaps one of the more limiting ways of communication. The power of art is that it’s able to deliver a message or idea without dialogue, because our emotions are inherently more complex than words can describe. When I take a photograph, I want to evoke an emotion, I want to take the audience somewhere and let them discover that world, hopefully having them return with a different perspective. It’s important that the work is spectacular in order to pull you in and lock you in its grasp to tell you it’s story. Even a negative emotion can be teaching; it’s when a work has no reaction, or is brushed over, that it becomes useless. I work meticulously with construction and perspective. Perspective plays two key roles because it talks about position of the camera as well as mindset. I’m someone whose background is polarized politically, religiously, and culturally. I’m polarized within myself where I can see the “rights” and “wrongs” on all sides but never be able to make a decision about it. The work is an extension of these multiple perspectives. Someone may see the beauty in the image, but feel a melancholic undertone. Other’s may see something as threatening, however find comfort in it. The images comfortably embrace these polarities, telling stories of negatives and positives, reminding the viewer that we are all a mixture of both.

Abdallah Shaarawi is a Cairo based photographer and multidisciplinary visual media artist whose body of work is without borders. Being multinational, he was always interested in bringing together a vast array of subject matter in order to break down perceptions existing on opposite sides of the cultural spectrum. His purpose is to reveal hidden gems within this spectrum for a global audience that says “I’m looking for the grey in a world so black and white”. Shaarawi is not bound by medium, and as such his works include film, video art, documentary, and photography. One of his short films “Hyperrealism” (2016) premiered at the Zawya short film festival in 2016. Abdallah’s video footage of the 2011 revolution was included in Joseph Gordon Levitt's Hit record production titled “In a City.” Upon graduating from Emerson College in Directing Film and Visual Media Arts, Abdallah worked on various sets and documentaries around the world including USA, Columbia, Japan, and his native Egypt. He’s worked with well-known institutions such as Working Title Films and The New York Times. Abdallah is currently working as a fashion photographer along with his wide spectrum of fine art projects.
