Fatma Abodoma

Overview

Cairo, multiple layers of images and times These layers are stacked with no prior order or planning, since ancient Memphis and Heliopolis, to Fatimate Cairo, passing through Fustat, Al-Askar, Al-Qata'i and the magnificent Memluk builders, arriving at Al Khedive imaginarium of modernity, bringing us to our current day with its random chaotic expansions masked as planning. If the mind is to be consulted, this archaic state, ought to be abandoned and demolished. Even though with its noticeable mould of time, she contains a beauty soaked in nostalgia and radiates with hope. Much like the city, that cannot be classified in one frame, photography fails to capture this beauty in a single shot. It’s this unfathomable emotion that is trapped in an old 35mm film, carrying a longing to a time when a photograph meant a unique and solemn adventure. Applying the double exposure technique over an expired film – much like the city; the result mirrors Cairo, surreal, unexplainable and crowded with details. Yet they hold beauty and sentimentality between its multiple layers coated with an overwhelming feeling of mystique.

Fatma also published a limited edition art book titled "Milk tea with mint". To quote Fatma herself, “For me, Art is therapy, the magic way to achieve complete happiness and peace of mind. My soul has been rescued by the lovely little paws that keep running in the house and believe me, there are a lot of them. Last but not least in a previous life, I was a whale who loved to sing”.
