Nour Kamel
Overview
Cairo, a city that continues to grow in more elaborate and complex ways than one thought possible: in land size, in population, in culture. A city that seamlessly blends wealth and poverty, health and disease, the biggest malls and the smallest holes-in-the-wall. A city whose history is ever so present and its day-to-day louder than it has ever been. How much MORE can Cairo become? Cairo’s downtown shops are guardians of its heritage and witnesses of its bustle. Their windows, unmoved, stand tall against the ever-changing life they reflect. Through them is captured the contrasts that make Cairo the glorious city that it is, the medley of energies that shapes into such an unfathomable force.
Born
Education
Born and raised in Cairo, Nour Kamel developed a passion for art at a very young age, and for photography in particular during her teenage years. It was when she studied in Europe that she started practicing street phone-photography regularly. Since moving back to Cairo in 2013, she’s been seeing the city with a pair of fresh eyes and nurturing her passion for photography by practicing as often as she can use both her smartphone and camera. Her fascination with Cairo allows her to explore its multiple layers from different perspectives, and her work in development takes her to some of the cities least seen places. Among others, she has participated in Group exhibitions at Darb 1718 and SOMA Art Gallery. She has also been featured in two publications including Penguin Books’ “Life on Instagram” and was nominated as a “Suggested User” by Instagram.
