LIMONATA

There are certain subjects that seem too familiar to warrant prolonged attention. We encounter them daily, often without a second thought. Yet it is precisely these ordinary things that, when observed closely enough, begin to reveal unexpected histories and associations. In Limonata, Soraya Fahmy reminds us of this possibility. Over the course of two years, she has followed the lemon through medicine, folklore, ritual, music and popular culture, allowing a single fruit to unfold into a remarkably expansive field of enquiry. What has always fascinated me about Fahmy's practice is that research is never presented as evidence alone. It becomes a creative methodology. Facts give rise to imagination, archival material finds new visual form, and knowledge is translated into something that can be experienced physically as well as intellectually. Across painting, sculpture and installation, colour, texture and scent become integral to the work. Yellow permeates the gallery, while the fragrance of lemon quietly extends the exhibition beyond the visual, creating an environment that is as immersive as it is contemplative. This approach recalls her earlier exhibition, Fungi, where another seemingly modest subject became the starting point for a much broader reflection on the natural world. Fahmy has a remarkable ability to reveal the extraordinary within the familiar. Rather than presenting nature as something fixed or self-explanatory, she uncovers the cultural, historical and imaginative lives embedded within it. Perhaps that is what stayed with me most while spending time with Limonata. It is not simply an exhibition about lemons, but about the rewards of sustained attention and curiosity.
